A Frozen Fruit Treat

My sons like to watch Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood (it is kind of a re-imagining of Mr. Roger's Neighborhood) just before nap time. On one of the episodes, they made "Banana Swirl" to eat for dessert. They also showed you in the episode how to make it. Well, my oldest son asked me if I could make "Banana Squirrel" for him to eat and I thought, 'What the heck. I even have frozen bananas in the freezer because I use them for my smoothies.'

It is really easy to make. You use a blender (it may take some time depending on the strength of your blender, and you may have to push the bananas down from time to time to get them to blend up) and it is basically just bananas (I also added just a little sugar).

Banana Swirl

Ingredients:

2 sliced frozen bananas (the smaller the slices, the easier it will be to blend)
Sugar, to taste, optional
(See notes for additional add-in possibilities)

Directions:

Place frozen bananas in your blender. Add a little sugar, to taste.

Blend on a low or medium-low setting until the bananas reach the consistency of soft-serve ice cream. (This can take awhile, and you may need to stop your blender and push the bananas down towards the blades with a spoon periodically until it reaches the right consistency. It goes first to a chunky, icy, almost granita-like consistency...but keep blending, and it will become smooth).

Spoon the banana swirl immediately into a bowl or ice cream cone (it will be soft). Or, you can put it back in your freezer to ripen so that it is the consistency of ice cream. I have done both, and it is delicious both ways!

You can even top it with sprinkles, or chocolate sauce, etc. if you like.

Source: As mentioned above, I saw this idea on an episode of Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood.

Notes: If it weren't for my boys' allergies, this would be absolutely FANTASTIC with a little Nutella or peanut butter mixed in. Even still, as is with just bananas and a little sugar, this is super yummy. It doesn't taste like bananas...it tastes like banana ice cream. Delicious stuff. You could also add a little cocoa powder for a chocolate banana swirl.

  2. I've made that before! I saw it on pinterest. It definitely does not need any sugar though. Waste of calories! You could add some cocoa powder for the boys, they might like that.
